Erin Wooddell
Over the past several months, I’ve heard many people—myself included—confess that this season of HIMYM hasn’t been its best. Still, I felt a wave of sadness last night as I fiddled with my brand new cable box and DVR (insert squeal of joy here) and set up my final recording of the show. It has, after all, been a part of my life for nine seasons.
There’s always a bit of sadness that comes along with the end of a TV series. I’m not sure if it’s the absence of that weekly time filler, the absence of the characters, or finally knowing how it ends. These days, the first two excuses are null and void, thanks to programs like Netflix and Hulu.

For me, I think it’s mostly the final reason. The best example I have of this is Will & Grace. Ah, I loved that show., but I’d only ever seen re-runs and decided I wanted to watch it in order. These were the days before Netflix instant was a thing, so over time I bought all the seasons. Endless laughs ensued, followed by a dramatic and all-too sad ending.
For those of you who’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil it for you. I’ll just say that it came too close to real life and after all those seasons filled with laughter, I didn't understand why it had to end on such a bittersweet note. Because of this, I’ve never again watched the entire series. I can’t, because I know that ending awaits me.
The HIMYM world has been abuzz with predictions and spoilers of tonight's finale. It’s hard to know what to believe and I find myself worried about the ending, hoping we're not met with sadness in the story. Despite my grumbles about the method and direction of this final season, I still love the show and these characters; Marshall and Lily and their hilarious and loving relationship, Robin and her quirky skills like cigar smoking and shooting, Barney and his lies and games, Ted’s big heart and never-ending stories.
In honor of tonight, I started to think about my favorite episodes over the years:
Season 1:
The Duel
Reason Why: The way Ted handles his concern over Lily moving in.
Drumroll, Please
Reason Why: The promise of a perfect night with no promises or hopes = the ultimate romantic evening.
Season 2:
First Time in New York
Reason Why: It was the first episode of this show I ever saw, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Slap Bet Reason Why: Robin Sparkles. 'Nuff said. Season 3: How I Met Everyone Else Reason Why: Backstories are the best. Season 4: Woooo! Reason Why: It introduced the world to the label of 'Woo girl.' Season 5: Jenkins Reason Why: "But um." | |
Season 8:
The Over-Correction
Reason why: Ted's red cowboy boots. Gets me every time.
After a show like Friends it was hard to image that any other show about a group of friends could compete or touch our souls in a similar way. Many pilots tried and failed, and HIMYM was the one that stuck. They went down an avenue never-before traveled in a sitcom about friends, and it’ll forever be in our hearts.
Here’s to you, HIMYM. May your ending have joy, since you’ve brought such joy to our lives.
