As we’ve established before, getting up in the mornings is sometimes a difficult feat for me. To make the process easier, I usually wake up to talk radio. I find the calm voices don’t scare me as much as a beeping alarm or the loud trills of an unexpected song.
Lately, however, my body has been rebelling against waking up early. After hitting the snooze button half a dozen times the other morning and singing 'The Hardest Thing' by 98 Degrees in reference to getting out of my comfortable bed, I knew something had to change. Thank goodness for smart phones and the ability to set multiple alarms.

I’m one of those people who finds amusement in coincidence, and woke up chucking the other day because the shuffled song that pulled me from sleep was singing about the morning.
Later as I glanced through my iTunes music list, I realized I had a lot of songs with the words ‘morning’ and ‘day’ in them. I decided to make a playlist full of these songs to see me through my daily routine and commute.

| A few highlights: "It’s a Beautiful Morning” The Rascals I grew up in a household of early risers. Though I am not innately like them in that way, I always felt more productive as a kid when I got up early. This song instantly transports me to early summer mornings as a kid, greeted by the sounds of my mom cleaning house to oldies and rushing to finish chores early so my brother and I could spend the entire rest of the day at the pool. "Feelin' The Same Way" Norah Jones "The sun just left its glow below my door, and I can't hide beneath my sheets." An everyday feeling. "Brand New Day" Lindsey Ray with Tim Myers This song is cute and will put a pep in your step. It may have once been on a commercial. "Ordinary Day" Vanessa Carlton An appropriate song for those lackluster, ho-hum mornings. |
"Then the Morning Comes" Smash Mouth
Bet this is a throw back for most of you. It's true, though. The morning always comes.
"Who Needs Shelter" Jason Mraz
Jason Mraz has many hits that grace the radio wires for months on end. This song is a little less popular than most of his tunes, but it's my favorite. "Good day, sunlight. I'd like to say how truly bright you are. You don't know me but I know you, see, you're my favorite star. Follow you, I will, so let's get moving."
"New Shoes" Paolo Nutini
"Woke up cold one Tuesday..." Over the years I've burned my mom many a CD. She never quite appreciated the techno or Beyonce hits I'd throw into the mix, but this song she loved. It remains at the top of her favorites list.
"Beggar in the Morning" The Barr Brothers
Turn this on first thing if you're the kind of person who takes awhile to wake up. The intro of soft guitar music lasts longer than one minute and will slowly help you join the waking world. The lyrics remain calm and the tune will stay with you throughout the day.
"Lonesome Day" Bruce Springsteen
Bruce. That is all.
"A Foggy Day" Frank Sinatra
Coincidentally, this was the first song to play the other morning as I turned on my car and drove to work underneath a sky covered in gloom and fog.
"Long Hot Summer Days" Sara Watkins
The super talented Sara Watkins, one-third of Nickel Creek, continues her talent streak with her solo albums. This song is uber appropriate as temperatures here soar toward the mid-90s every day.
"Sleepin' Is All I Wanna Do" The Duhks
I put this on the mix for those days where I really and truly resent getting up early.
Happy Listening!
