It's the day after Thanksgiving. You know what that means? It's officially OK to start celebrating Christmas! Go ahead, crank up the Christmas tunes, trim the tree and decorate your house a la Clark Griswold! Thanksgiving is over, and Christmas is here to stay! (At least for the next few weeks.)
There are so many wonderful things about the holiday season. I couldn't even begin to try listing them all, but the one thing I can list are some of my favorite holiday tunes. Tomorrow G and I will be driving back from New York and I am armed with the following Christmas playlists. Time to carol as we drive down I-95!

Christmas Songs for the Kid in You
Anyone else miss being a kid at Christmas? Come on, it can't just be me. The lessons in church, the anticipation of Santa's arrival, the break from school... there was a lot more magic to life back then. There's an easy fix for the adulthood blues this time of year, and it comes in the form of music. Get ready to step back in time! This playlist is full of songs from our favorite holiday movies; ranging from A Charlie Brown Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas to the more modern-day classic, Polar Express. Lisp along with Alvin and the Chipmunks as they wish for two front teeth—and a hula hoop—and sing all the lovely songs you were taught in grade-school about good ole Saint Nick. You'll be walking down memory lane as you flip through this playlist.
Traditional Christmas Songs
Everyone has their all-time favorite Christmas song. Mine just so happens to be #1 on this playlist. The way Frank Sinatra croons me to have a merry little Christmas is my favorite. I swear, if I was a teenage girl back when he was popular, I would have been one of the "Oh, Frankie!" fans. And proud of it! (I also included Judy Garland's lovely version of the song.) This playlist is comprised of older, well-known hits. Though most of the artists have long since left us, the beautiful way they sing about the holidays will be stuck in our memories and hearts forever. Fun fact: Everyone thinks "White Christmas" hails from Bing's popular movie of the same name, but that's a falsehood. Twelve years earlier, Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire were in a movie called Holiday Inn. "White Christmas" was written specifically for the Christmas scene in this movie. (It just so happens to be my favorite Christmas movie—and one that actually covers all the major holidays of the year—so I recommend checking it out!)
Contemporary Christmas Songs
Songs on this playlist could be considered traditional—since most have been out for several years—but I consider them to be a little more contemporary, either because the sound is different from the crooner classics, or because the song doesn't get as much radio airtime as the other beloved hits. "Last Christmas" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You" each have a sound far from the norm, and when I hear them, my toes start to tap and I want to sing at the top of my lungs. (I know co-blogger Emily can relate.) They're such fun songs. Seriously, look at the Wham! album cover. It doesn't get more awesome than that. Many artists have come out with Christmas albums during their time of popularity. Some find success and some don't. In this playlist I've included those who—in my mind—succeeded.
Christmas Songs About the 'Reason for the Season'
Gifts are often stressed as the important part of the holidays, and it's easy to get caught up in commercial jingles and the quest to find the right gift for loved ones, while losing sight of the bigger picture. As a kid, the Christmas season was my favorite time to go to church. It was fun to sit among the congregation, singing about the birth of Jesus, and I'd often get to participate in some form of pageant or concert to celebrate the holiday. Even now that I'm grown up, the Christmas Eve candlelight service is still my favorite service of the year. Singing "Silent Night" as the lights are dimmed and the candles are lit fills me with a great reverence, and I always find myself overwhelmed with peace, joy and hope. In this playlist, I combined a few tunes sung by traditional artists we all associate with holiday music, and a few sung by new voices. I hope you enjoy!
