We haven't written about How I Met Your Mother here at MISSadventure in a few weeks. On my end, it's because I feel there hasn't been much of note to write about.
At the beginning of the season, I had high expectations and was really intrigued by the idea of having the entire season take place during Robin and Barney's wedding weekend. The first few episodes didn't disappoint, introducing us to "the mother," having her meet—and bond—with Lily and addressing the topics we were worried about, like Ted trying to make a move on Robin this close to her wedding.
But the past few weeks, I feel like the writers are bored and simply trying to waste time to fill out the season. Last night's episode was no exception. The premise revolved around Ted, Robin and Barney trying to break into Lily's room to erase a text on her phone that informed her of Marshall taking the judgeship without consulting her first. Marshall wasn't ready for her to know, so he needed the help of his friends to remove all traces of this blunder.
We viewers are used to crazy shenanigans on this show, but last night it felt a little overkill and kind of insulting. I've been a fan for over 8 seasons now. This is the final—and pivotal—season, and instead of making each and every episode truly amazing, we're watching Robin play secret agent in a bright purple unitard and Barney crawl through air ducts with pigeons named after celebrities. I wouldn't mind these ridiculous storylines if they mirrored what I'm used to from this bunch, making me cry from laughing so hard. Last night, I barely chuckled.
Something feels really off and disconnected this season. Maybe they need to get back to the root of the show (finding the mother), or have the whole gang together in one place. Marshall has spent the entire season off-screen from everyone else, and I think that's contributing to the lackluster feel of each episode.
If the rest of the episodes are going to be like last night, we've got a long season ahead of us.
