Erin Wooddell
My personal TV goal over the past two weeks has been to catch up on my favorite comedies. Before the holidays, I'd been feeling a little bored with New Girl, and I simply kept forgetting to watch The Mindy Project. Before I knew it, I was five episodes behind.
Binge-watching the latest from these two shows reminded me of all the reasons I became a fan in the first place.
Why I still love.....
New Girl
1. Nick and Jess.
I was starting to get a little worried about this couple, because the first few episodes of the season fell a little flat for me. When I went so long without watching, I actually contemplated giving up on the show. But catching up this week, I was pleasantly greeted by scenes reminiscent of the early seasons. (Except now there's the adorable factor of Nick as a boyfriend. He's still my favorite.)
Jess: "Every day you show me how you care about me. Like when you pick up rubber bands on the sidewalk..."
Nick, looking very proud of himself: "For your ponytail."
2. Nick is still ridiculous and an over-reactor: "I'm pretty sure I’m having a heart attack and I haven’t arranged for anyone to clear my internet history. I wasn’t building a bomb...I was just curious."

3. Winston and Coach.
At the beginning of the season, I felt like Winston was getting foreshadowed by the reemergence of Coach. As if his character also noticed that, these two guys fell into competition with each other.
For Jess' birthday, they started a cake bake-off and ended up bonding in the process.
I personally loved when Winston described his paper towel apron as "eco-friendly." And when they kept saying "behind" as they moved about the kitchen, just like the culinary professionals on all cooking competition TV shows.
4. Schmidt being kind.
Though his motivation for visiting Cece at the bar wasn't really in the spirit of being supportive, it was nice when he came to her aid in a moment of need. (I'm not sure that learning how to make a Manhattan is really a 'moment of need,' but go with it.) It's easy for Schmidt to get caught up in playing the part of a jerk, so it's nice when he has these rare moments of humility and kindness. (Though, at the end, his video message to Jess reverted back to his narcissistic antics.)

The Mindy Project
1. Mindy is still hilarious. Take these gems for example:
Danny's dad: "Would you like to come in for some potato chip pie?"
Mindy: "Yes. Potato chip pie sounds like it combines all my favorite things."
Mindy: "No, no. Don't walk with me. Walk 20 feet behind me, and every so often whistle that song from The Hunger Games so I know you're not dead."
Mindy: "I have a question: How close are you to finding Bin Laden? I'm asking cause I feel like I see him every day in New York."
2. There is true friendship on this show. Peter and Morgan showed real solidarity to Mindy by bailing on Cliff the moment they found out he was the one to end the relationship.
3. The kiss. OH MY GOODNESS! Honestly, I don't even know what to say about this, except, "WAY TO GO, DANNY!" It's about time. I want these two to get together really badly, but I'm also afraid of how this change could affect the dynamic between these two great characters.

Can you believe we have to wait until April to find out what happens after that kiss!?
